DSDC and the Dow Institute of Radiology (DIR) successfully conducted the Open House session for the City & Guilds Medical Device Specialist Certification on 27th May 2025, at the Dow International Medical College.The session featured representatives from GEMS Pathways, the authorised representatives of City & Guilds UK in Pakistan, Mr. Tabish H. Fareedi, Country Manager, and Mr. Furqan Iqbal, Head of Academics, who provided a comprehensive overview of the program and its global career & business opportunities to the 350+ participants comprising students & professionals from Dow & other universities and organisations across Karachi. Both speakers shared valuable insights into the structure, relevance, and international recognition of this 80-hour certification program, particularly in the EU & the MENA regions.

The Medical Device Specialist Certification is now officially launched. The course covers regulatory standards (FDA, ISO), device classifications, lifecycle management, and emerging trends, with hands-on practice through case studies and real-world simulations.

This City & Guilds certificate program is one of 12 being offered by Dow University of Health Sciences. City & Guilds is a Royal Chartered Institute recognized in over 100 countries, boosting the global employability and credibility of healthcare students, faculty, and professionals by validating their skills to international standards.

As part of the Pak-Sri Lanka Faculty Exchange Program of the Higher Education Commission Pakistan, Prof. Dr. Chantha Jayawardena, a distinguished faculty member of Dentistry from the University of Peradeniya, Sri Lanka, visited the School of Dental Care Professionals (SDCP), one of the four dental academic units of Dow University of Health Sciences (DUHS), Karachi, on May 27th, 2025.During her visit, Prof. Jayawardena engaged extensively with the faculty members, staff, and students of the Dental Auxiliary programs—Dental Hygiene and Dental Technology—fostering discussions aimed at enhancing academic excellence, professional training, and interdisciplinary collaboration in dental education.

To commemorate Prof. Jayawardena's visit, an Innovation Showcase was organized, featuring interactive Table Clinic Presentations by Dental Hygiene and Technology students. These presentations, centered on the theme “Digital and Auxiliary Innovation – Revolutionising Oral Healthcare,” demonstrated student ingenuity and underscored the institution's dedication to forward-thinking dental education. Each presentation group comprised five students from different semesters, teaming up from both Dental Hygiene and Dental Technology programs.

Prof. Jayawardena's participation significantly enriched the academic discourse of the event. She actively reviewed student exhibits and shared her expert insights on the digital transformation of dental education from both Sri Lankan and global perspectives.

Over the past decade, laser-based techniques have revolutionized surgical care by offering minimally invasive options that preserve normal tissue and significantly reduce post-operative complications.

Key Highlights:

-Laser Hemorrhoidoplasty (LHP) – No cut, no bleed, no pain. A patient-friendly alternative to conventional surgery that tackles algophobia (fear of pain) and haematophobia (fear of bleeding).
-FiLaC (Fistula-tract Laser Closure) – A cutting-edge approach for treating complex anal fistulas while preserving sphincter function and minimizing morbidity.
-SiLaC (Sinus Laser Closure) – An innovative, minimally invasive procedure for pilonidal sinus disease, offering faster healing, less pain, and quicker return to normal activities.

Mock Clinical Examination for FCPS Trainees – Department of Orthodontics, DIKIOHS Ojha CampusThe Department of Orthodontics at DIKIOHS Ojha Campus successfully organized a mock clinical examination for FCPS trainees on 26th May 2025.

The session was conducted under the esteemed leadership of Professor Imtiaz Ahmed, Dean of the Faculty of Dentistry and Head of the Orthodontics Department at DIKIOHS. The clinical session was led by Dr. Sadia Rizwan, Associate Professor and Incharge of the Orthodontics Department, with the valuable support of our respected faculty members: Dr. Anum Sattar, Dr. Muhammad Ashfaq, Dr. Hiba Tabassum, Dr Taskeen and Dr Adeel. 

We were honored to host distinguished external examiners: Dr. Samra Bukhari (NICH), Dr. Hina (JSMU), and Dr. Sadaf (Bahria University), who provided insightful guidance and clinical strategies aimed at helping trainees succeed in the FCPS examination.

The examination followed the FCPS clinical exam format, comprising long and short case assessments. At the conclusion of the session, examiners shared essential tips and strategies to enhance performance in the actual examination.

The feedback received from trainees was overwhelmingly positive, reflecting the success of the initiative. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to all faculty members for their dedication and collaboration, and we look forward to organizing more such productive clinical sessions in the future.
DUHS–LDS 2nd Annual General Body MeetingDow University of Health Sciences organized its second Annual General Body Meeting on Thursday, May 22, in Muin Auditorium, Dow Medical College. The event was attended by the General Body members of the society from various departments of DUHS. Dr. Ashar Afaq, Registrar of Dow University of Health Sciences, and Dr. Danish Haseen, Faculty Coordinator of DUHS–LDS, honoured us by attending the event as guests.

Following the beginning of the event with the recitation of the Holy Qur'an and Naat, the newly elected Executive Committee was sworn in. The Oath Ceremony was conducted by Dr. Ashar Afaq.

Subsequently, an ice-breaking session was held, in which the dynamic hosts of the event, Rijja Ahmed, Joint Secretary–Main Campus, and Javeria Rao, Joint Secretary–Ojha Campus, posed intriguing and amusing questions to energize the audience.

The participants of the Open Mic afterwards gave spectacular performances, amusing the audience with their comical write-ups, fascinating them with their brilliant use of language, and captivating them with their profound messages.

Later on, awards were given to the General Body members who performed excellently throughout the previous tenure. Members who achieved notable accomplishments were lauded in front of others, and their souvenirs were put on display.

DUHS–LDS' first magazine, a substantial milestone, was unveiled to the General Body to commemorate this major achievement. The deputy directors of the previous tenure were awarded appreciation certificates for their dedicated services.

The event concluded with a heartfelt poem by the President, who extended his gratitude to everyone who helped make the event a success.

The attendees commended the overall execution of the event. The organizers received an overwhelmingly positive response from both the audience and the guests.

IBHM Literary & Debate Society Hosts Impactful Session on "Presentation Mastery"The Literary & Debate Society of the Institute of Business & Health Management (IBHM) successfully organized an engaging and fully packed interactive session titled "Presentation Mastery: Convincing Audiences with Body Language, Voice, and Influence" on 21st May 2025. The session saw enthusiastic participation from students across various institutes of DUHS, making it a dynamic and diverse gathering.

Led by our inspiring trainers, Musharraf Khan and Mr. Kamran Ahmed, the session went beyond theory — delivering an immersive, hands-on experience designed to equip participants with real-world communication skills.

Practical Skills & Activities Included:

-Mastery of confident body language through interactive exercises
-Development of engaging presentation skills via group activities and peer feedback
-Practice of voice modulation techniques through vocal drills and real-time coaching
-Building influential presentation strategies using role-playing and scenario-based simulations
